What's the talk about?

 What is the talk about?

In his books Prof Wade Allison has highlighted the scientific evidence of the effect of radiation on humans and has contrasted that with the cultural rejection of nuclear energy, at all but the highest levels. He has discussed the harmless, and even beneficial, interaction of radiation with life. After the Fukushima accident his popular work was translated into Japanese and Chinese.

These issues have even greater relevance now due to the critical stage we have reached on addressing climate change by finding alternatives to fossil fuels. Nuclear energy is carbon free and provides supply certainty that renewable technologies such as wind and solar cannot. We cannot afford to ignore nuclear energy merely due to myths about radiation

Who is the speaker?

Prof Allison has been at the Physics Department at Oxford since the 1960s and spent most of his career doing experiments at CERN as well as his teaching. After his official retirement in 2008 he has continued to teach, lecture, publish and study. His books include “Radiation and Reason: The Impact of Science on a Culture of Fear” (2009) and “Nuclear is for Life” (2015). Prof Allison is the Hon Sec of SONE Supporters Of Nuclear Energy, which is at arms length from the nuclear industry and does not speak for them. He says that he speaks for my grandchildren.

Who are we?

Skeptics in the Pub is a place for inquisitive people of all ages to meet and converse in the High Wycombe area.

Skeptics are people who yearn to discover the truth behind extraordinary claims that people or groups may make, this can be in areas of alternative therapies, the paranormal, religion and faith, the afterlife and many other areas of life. We we often end up talking about superstition, science, religious fundamentalism, health, censorship and conspiracy theory

We make no claims to balance, and actively promote science, freedom of expression and secular humanism..

You are welcome to come along and just sit and listen to others, or if you are braver get stuck right in with conversation and views!
