What's the talk about?

 What is the talk about?

Antonis will give us an introduction on the concepts of particle physics and quantum mechanics, as well as the latest research at the Large Hadron Collier with emphasis on results from the LHCb experiment. This will be an accessible talk that everyone can enjoy and learn from, and there will be a time for questions afterwards.

Who is the speaker?

Antonis Papanestisgrew up in Athens, Greece and did a physics degree at the University of Ioannina, in NW Greece, followed by 18 months of compulsory military service. In 1993 he came to London to do a PhD at University College London on detector development for particle physics and medical imaging. He then spent 18 months in Pisa, Italy, as a Marie Curie fellow, continuing the detector development for the CMS experiment at CERN. In 2000 he got his current job at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, working for the LHCb experiment. In 2007 and 2008 he was in Geneva getting involved with the installation of the two Ring Imaging Cherenkov detectors of the LHCb experiment, which are used in particle identification. He returned to Geneva in 2010 to take over the operational aspects of the RICH detectors eventually becoming the "project leader" (in charge of this particular subsystem, coordinating about 100 people and looking after detector systems worth ~5 million). He now shares his time between LHCb and DUNE, a new neutrino experiment that will start operation around 2027 in the USA.

Who are we?

Skeptics in the Pub is a place for inquisitive people of all ages to meet and converse in the High Wycombe area.

Skeptics are people who yearn to discover the truth behind extraordinary claims that people or groups may make, this can be in areas of alternative therapies, the paranormal, religion and faith, the afterlife and many other areas of life. We we often end up talking about superstition, science, religious fundamentalism, health, censorship and conspiracy theory

We make no claims to balance, and actively promote science, freedom of expression and secular humanism..

You are welcome to come along and just sit and listen to others, or if you are braver get stuck right in with conversation and views!
